COMO OLIVER HAZARD PERRY POST 1813
GREETINGS FROM COMMANDER
LEAVER
We held our March meeting at a new place, The Rusty Bucket in Worthington. The food was good and the hospitality excellent. We also will have our June Meeting there. Our program moved a bit away from the military. Son Scott Leaver told us of his interesting experiences as a manager of a Ziebart facility. I have one more son, and if we can get him out of the fire truck, out of the airplane, out of his pizza shop, and off the farm/airport some meeting night, we’ll look forward to hearing from him. Then it’s somebody else’s turn.
Our Post has been busy since our last meeting. On 1 April, we participated in Tartan Day Festivities at Reynoldsburg, ably hosted by Margaret and Anne. As usual, they dragooned John and Jack into helping. We garnered a fair amount of interest and have gotten at least one new member – Mark Melroy from Caledonia (how’s that for a Scottish connection?). Mark’s an avid Civil War ReCreator as well as an accomplished piper with the Pipes and Drums of Aladdin. We look forward to his taking an active role in the Post’s activities, starting with the Ohio Scottish Games 24 June.
On 4 April, we went to the Statehouse, where we raised the Scottish flag in the Tartan Day ceremony of reading the Governor’s proclamation. We have agreed to take the responsibility of representing the Scottish Community in Columbus for future years. Present from the post were: Commander Leaver, Adjutant McFee, Quartermaster Morrison and last but not least, Comptroller/Post Piper McCullough (who did all the work by piping us down the walk and playing during the flag raising).
In May and early June, we presented the annual SAMS awards to the outstanding ROTC Cadets at OSU. It’s inspiring to see the enthusiasm and dedication of these young warriors-to-be.
On Memorial Day, we hit the streets in Worthington for their parade, me on my motorcycle and McFee in the sidecar waving the SAMS Flag. We had many favorable comments – and probably a few snide ones-, but it beats marching. At the post-parade gathering in the Legion Hall, we met some of the members of Lima Co, another fine group of young men.
The Ohio Scottish Games are 23-25 June at the Lorain County fairgrounds in Wellington. As usual, Jack Buchanan has given us the use of his trailer. Please attend and give a little bit of your time at the trailer.
All the Best - Dick

TARTAN DAY AT REYNOLDSBURG
BARCLAY SURVIVES HEART ATTACK
CPT Jodie E. McFee NGOH is to be deployed to Iraq in August for a 15-month tour; she is currently Admin Officer for the 37th Brigade Special Troops Bn in Springfield. Her exact mission is classified (she won’t even tell her Dad the details), but rest assured she’ll do the best job possible. She’ll be leaving behind two young daughters in the capable hands of her husband, LTC Jerry Rees. We hope to get periodic reports on her activities while she is deployed. Jerry has
her with about every electronic tool (gadget) available so she'll be in
close communication stateside; just a little more advanced than you old sailors and soldiers were used to.
While Jodie is our post’s first (and only) female member to be deployed, she joins some good company. Since the War on Terror began, Dana Russell has spent two tours in Iraq, plus one in CONUS; Joe Dickerson, Jr. a tour in Afghanistan; Jerry Rees one tour CONUS.
Godspeed, Jodie! WITH FIRE AND SWORD!
On 5 April, while officiating a lacrosse game between Thomas Worthington and Hilliard Davidson, our own Ted Barclay suffered a heart attack. He remembers nothing of the day except getting a cup of coffee before the game.
“I don’t remember falling down. I didn’t gray out. I didn’t have a flash of white light. I woke up in the hospital the next day and said ‘What is going on? What am I doing here?’”, he said.
Turns out, he missed some heroic efforts to same his life. The
school had an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), which one of the players ran to get while a Coronary Nurse, who just happened to be in the stands watching her son play, administered CPR. Medical personnel had to use the AED twice to get a pulse. He was in Riverside within forty-five minutes, where doctors inserted a pacemaker/defibrillator. He’s recovering and expects to be back at officiating soon. Here’s to one tough Scot!
Who’s the mystery man? None other than our Commander! The judge said she just looooved soft knees. He beat out such knotable knees as Guyselman, Rees, McCullough, and McFee.
